Grammar-Kim Marshall:
We will complete units in grammar, writing skills, and word analysis. These are ideal for classrooms that need self-instructing materials, but they are also effective for whole-class instruction, for reinforcement exercises, and for homework assignments.
6th Grade Novels:
Love That Dog and Hate That Cat by Sharon Creech- Two stories about how a boy named Jack finds his voice and a love of poetry with the help of a teacher, a pencil, some yellow paper, a dog, and later a cat. Written as a series of free-verse poems.
A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park- Two stories, told in alternating sections, about two 11 year-olds in Sudan, a girl in 2008 and a boy in 1985. The girl, Nya, is fetching water from a pond that is two hours’ walk from her home: she makes two trips to the pond every day. The boy, Salva, becomes one of the "lost boys" of Sudan, refugees who cover the African continent on foot as they search for their families and for a safe place to stay. Enduring every hardship Salva is a survivor, and his story goes on to intersect with Nya’s in an astonishing and moving way.
Listening for Lions by Gloria Whelan- Africa is the only home Rachel Sheridan has ever known. But when influenza strikes down her missionary parents, she is left vulnerable prey to her family's wicked neighbors. Surrounded by greed and lies, Rachel is entangled in a criminal scheme and sent to England, where she is forced into a life of deception. She must be patient and strong, awaiting the moment when she can take control of her own fate—and find her way home again at last.
The Cay by Theodore Taylor- The story of 11 year of Phillip who is blinded and finds himself adrift on a life raft with an old man and a cat when his family attempts to sail to the safety of Virginia from the Caribbean in 1942. During their troubles, Phillip is suspicious but soon grows to trust--and ultimately love--the patient and generous Timothy. The Cay has a clear message that friendship is colorblind.
Colibrí by Ann Cameron- The story of 12 year old Mayan girl and her quest for the family she was stolen from. Kidnapped at the age of four by a con man who keeps her because he has been told she will lead him to a treasure, Colibrí yearns for her parents, even after eight years. The suspenseful conclusion will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan- The story of a remarkable young woman named Koly who dares to defy fate. Inspired by a newspaper article about the real thirteen–year–old widows in India today, this universally acclaimed best–selling novel, transports readers into the heart of a gripping tale of hope.
Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah- The true story of Chinese-American physician and author Adeline Yen Mah describing her painful childhood growing up in China during WWII and her ultimate triumph and courage in the face of despair.
